Managing several interrelated projects at the same time presents certain challenges and varies greatly from managing one project at a time. Program Managers do not manage individual projects, they organize teams working on connected projects. In Program Management a well planned coordination is required and an interaction with various functional units is critical. Thus, assembling a right team and gaining input from all stakeholders may play a very important role in the program’s success. Since managing programs goes well beyond satisfying outputs of individual projects, and the Program Management is usually aligned with reaching identifiable strategic objectives, e.g. improving customer service, increasing market share, lowering of operating costs, the Program Manager must possess special skills, and acquire unique experience to guide the process towards such objectives and yet be mindful of individual project requirements and deliverables. Program Management is all about leadership and planning, planning how to allocate resources based on project requirements and usage and the resource availability, how to manage risks and changes, how to align the acquisition to the overall strategic objectives without creating unnecessary financial complications, how to maintain quality, how to establish proper channels of internal communication and status reporting, and so on and so on. This course will address the skills required in Program Management and provide a number of practical case studies in which the participants will play the role of Program Manager. The outcome of each case study will be evaluated and discussed in class. Leadership competencies will be sharpened or learned from scratch. The course is intended for individuals involved in program management. Whether you are a novice or an experienced manager, everybody will benefit from this program.
This course is divided into two parts. Day One of the program is designed to provide attendees with an understanding of the complexities of Program Management, and the skills required to deal with such challenges while Day Two is devoted to practical application of lessons learned.
